9.29.2006 // Jason Luck attended the Carolina Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Law Association Fall meeting at Hilton Head Island.

Jason Luck attended the Carolina Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Law Association Fall meeting at Hilton Head Island.  The CPTCLA is an association of intellectual property attorneys and patent agents practicing in North and South Carolina.

Highlights of the meeting include:
A presentation detailing litigation before the United States International Trade Commission, a seldom-used quasi-judicial federal agency that administers certain United States trade laws.  Such litigation is frequently used by United States companies to stop importation of counterfeit and other illegal goods and is a speedy and efficient process compared to litigation in Federal Courts.
A presentation on general copyright issues, using infringement of house plans as an example of the exposure companies can face when they utilize another's copyrighted works.  Litigation between architects and homebuilders has become more common as the internet has made copying and altering house plans easier.
A presentation by the general counsel of Motorsports Authentics describing the incredible impact of NASCAR on the national economy, and the strategies that motorsports authentics employs to control counterfeit merchandise through the Trademark Counterfeiting Act of 1984.  The TCA provides an effective procedure for owners of intellectual property to utilize local law enforcement to get counterfeit goods off the market.
Jason has been an associate with the Seibels Law Firm, P.A. since 2006. His areas of specialty are construction litigation, intellectual property, title claims, and insurance defense litigation. He is a registered patent attorney.
